A graduate of the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Science degree in medicine, Southern decided to start his own business in 1947 when he and his father each put in $2,000 in the original Alberta Trailer Hire Co. which later became ATCO. First, the two purchased fifteen utility trailers and rented them out in the Calgary area, after which they started importing and marketing mobile homes in the States.
In the 1970's, the father-and-son duo expanded their operations into the oil and gas business, and a decade later they later moved into electricity as well. Nowadays, the company holds interest in various companies that are active in structures and logistics, energy, utilities, and technology industries. Carrying out President duties for 48 years, Ronald Southern was also the Chairman of ATCO Ltd. and the Canadian Utilities until 2012. Currently, it is his daughter Nancy who serves as the president, chief executive officer, and chairwoman of ATCO.
