A Tokyo-bound American Airlines flight from New York City was forced to turn around 12 hours into the exhausting journey — infuriating New Yorkers who then had to spend the night at a cheap motel in Dallas, Texas.
The would-be 14-hour flight made a sudden U-turn due to a mechanical problem as it soared over the Pacific Ocean near Alaska at 10:45 a.m. Monday, according to airlive.net

Diverted flight #AA167 then landed in Dallas, Texas, where one passenger said weary travelers were left hungry in a low-budget hotel.
“@AmericanAir diverts us to DFW, reserves us a room in a Super 8 & gives us $12 food vouchers. This is not going to end well,” the New York resident wrote.
He later added, “Oh, and American didn’t have enough food for everyone.”
A second traveler fumed on Reddit, “We’ve gone 14 hours with only dried snap peas as a snack.”
Travelers on the flight eventually made it to Tokyo after another 13-hour flight Tuesday, according to airlive.net, which noted Dallas was, “probably the best place to get a spare [Boeing] 787-9 and a new crew.”
The travel nightmare is reportedly among the lengthiest diversions of 2025.

It wasn’t immediately clear exactly why the call was made to turn the plane around that far into the trip.
American Airlines didn’t immediately return a request for comment Wednesday.
