JD Vance Suggests He Could Run For President In 2028 — But Only After Consulting With Trump

Vice President JD Vance suggested Thursday he could run for president in 2028 if he delivers as VP — but only after he consults with President Trump about it.

“When we get to that point, I’ll talk to the president, we’ll figure out what we want to do. But the way that I think about it is, if we do a good job, the politics take care of themselves,” Vance said on “Fox & Friends.”

“There’s so much to do,” he added, “and I don’t really think that much about what happens in three and a half years.”

Republicans in Vance’s circle have told The Post the vice president is a likely front-runner for the GOP nomination — but stressed that hinges on his performance as Republican National Committee finance chair in the 2026 midterms.

It also depends on whether he gets on Trump’s bad side, the GOP sources said.

Trump, 78, has floated the possibility of running for a third term and said his team is looking at the constitutional issues posed by the move.

He told NBC News on Sunday that “one method” would be to have Vance, 40, run for the presidency — but hand the reins back to him and return to the vice presidency after winning.

“I’m not joking,” the 47th president said about the prospect of a third term. “But I’m not — it is far too early to think about it.”

The Constitution’s 22nd Amendment — ratified in 1951, years after President Franklin Delano Roosevelt had served three terms and died in office during his fourth — states that a candidate can’t be elected for more than two terms, which Trump allies believe provides a possible loophole.

“No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice,” the amendment reads.

But Trump would stil have to contend with the 12th Amendment, which states “no person constitutionally ineligible” for the presidency can serve as vice president.

In theory, the president could also try to become the Speaker of the House and then have both the VP and president step down.

House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) has poured cold water on any future attempts by Congress to amend the Constitution.

“There’s a constitutional path. You have to amend the Constitution to do it, and that’s a high bar,” Johnson told reporters on Tuesday.

“The president and I have talked about this, joked about it. He’s joked about it with me on stage before,” the House speaker added. “You know, we take him at his word.”

Additionally, any constitutional amendment would require a vote of two-thirds of both the House and Senate and then a ratification by three-fourths of the state legislatures or conventions.
