Trump’s ‘Liberation Day’ Tariff Blitz: Letters To The Editor — April 4, 2025

Trump’s new tariffs take aim at heart of the U.S. economy: Consumers

The Issue: President Trump unveiling universal tariffs on American trading partners worldwide.

The primary purpose of President Trump’s tariffs is to protect domestic industries by encouraging consumers to purchase locally made products, ultimately leading to more jobs (“World War Fee,” April 3).

While Trump’s tariffs may cause an initial sting, they will stabilize over time and strengthen domestic industries. As production increases, so will job opportunities across various sectors.

We must allow these tariffs to take effect — they will work, and our economy will grow as a result.

History will likely remember this presidential era for its protectionism, isolationism and nativism. Rather than strengthening our economy, tariffs are pushing us down the road to economic disaster.

“To tariff or not to tariff, that is the question”: Brilliant minds may differ on the issue, but the left and the delusional Democrats oppose anything associated with Trump.

It is not surprising that four Republican senators finally said “enough is enough” and voted against President Trump’s tariffs on Canada. Rather than using tariffs as an effective business tool to promote American-made production and job creation, he has applied them punitively to longtime allies like Canada and Mexico.

While I strongly support his swift actions on border security, he has missed an opportunity to create a fairer tariff system.

By making the issue personal rather than economic, he risks undermining the very success of his administration.

I am disappointed; this was apparently the greatest day in American history. Did Trump forget about World War II? Those heroes didn’t fight for tariffs.

The Issue: Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani’s radical run to become New York’s next mayor.

I agree with Michael Goodwin, Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani is coming dangerously close to winning the race for New York City mayor (“Dangerous Mam,” April 2).

Rep. Rashida Tlaib’s support for Mamdani, addressing his followers as “comrades,” should tell voters everything they need to know.

Socialists promise everything and take away everything you have. Mamdani claims the police have too much money and power — another way of saying he supports defunding law enforcement. If people like this gain influence, New York will suffer. His hostility toward Israel is also alarming. Goodwin is right to sound the alarm — it’s getting scary out there.

    Catherine Adago

    Manhattan

Goodwin is absolutely right about Mamdani’s socialist agenda. Unfortunately, there are not enough left-wing voters who read this paper, and many are too easily swayed by socialist rhetoric.
God help New York City. Hopefully, people will wake up before it’s too late.

Zohran Mamdani wants to be the mayor of New York City. If his campaign is successful, he would bring an anti-Israel agenda to City Hall.
